Urban Nature: Exploring Our Riverscape

Two-hour workshop – suitable for all ages

Explore the plants and creatures that can be spotted in and around Newport Quay and along the tidal River Medina in this interactive two-hour workshop.

On arrival, participants will choose a photo of a local species — from duck, swan and seagull to woodlouse, ladybird, fox, magpie, weeds or dandelion clock — and use it as a starting point for creative exploration.

We’ll begin with a short seasonal icebreaker, reflecting on the recent vernal equinox, the balance of daylight and darkness, the moon’s effect on the tides, and the tidal nature of the River Medina.

Through discussion and guided free-writing inspired by urban nature writing, we’ll consider how humans are part of nature too and explore the unusual in the everyday. Participants will use all their senses to write about their chosen plant or creature, with time to…
